What is the “Great Day of the Lord”?

The Great Day of the Lord is the day of the Lord’s return, when He comes to bring justice to all the wrongs which have been done on the earth throughout the centuries. God’s vengeance will be released upon all who have rebelled, rejected, and disobeyed His commandments, ignoring His merciful offer of salvation.

No one knows the exact day that this will be; “Now as to the times and the epochs, brethren, you have no need of anything to be written to you. For you yourselves know full well that the day of the Lord will come just like a thief in the night. While they are saying, “Peace and safety!” then destruction will come upon them suddenly like labor pains upon a woman with child, and they will not escape”(I Thess.5:1-4). However, there are signs of its arrival, and prophecy of the events that will occur prior to His coming: ”and there will be great earthquakes, and in various places plagues and famines; and there will be terrors and great signs from heaven” (Lk.21:11). “Let no one in any way deceive you, for it will not come unless the apostasy comes first, and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the son of destruction” (2 Thess.2:3). And Jesus/Yeshua, prophesied: “So you also, when you see these things happening, recognize that the kingdom of God is near” (Lk.21:31).

Blow a trumpet in Zion, And sound an alarm on My holy mountain! Let all the inhabitants of the land tremble, For the day of the LORD is coming; Surely it is near” (Joel 2:1,2). The Day of the Lord will come “as destruction from the Almighty. Therefore all hands will fall limp, And every man’s heart will melt. They will be terrified, Pains and anguish will take hold of them; They will writhe like a woman in labor, They will look at one another in astonishment, Their faces aflame” (Isa.13:2-9). People have been attempting to discern the date of this event, some looking forward to, while others dreading this event, for centuries. Surely, now is the realistic observance of the signs.

On that Great Day of the Lord, while God will pour out His wrath on those who rejected Him, His own will be exempt: “Seek the LORD, All you humble of the earth Who have carried out His ordinances; Seek righteousness, seek humility. Perhaps you will be hidden In the day of the LORD’S anger” (Zeph.2:3). “But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, in which the heavens will pass away with a roar and the elements will be destroyed with intense heat, and the earth and its works will be burned up. Since all these things are to be destroyed in this way, what sort of people ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness, looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be destroyed by burning, and the elements will melt with intense heat!” (2 Pet.3:10-12). God will burn up all the evil and make everything brand new.

God’s own have no need to fear the GREAT DAY of the LORD. NO. Quite the opposite; God’s people are instructed to look forward to His coming, just as Peter indicated, so also Paul says we should be “waiting for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ/Yeshua Messiah” (1Cor.1:7), “For our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, who will transform our lowly body that it may be conformed to His glorious body” (Phil.3:20,21). He tells us to be “looking for the blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ” (Titus 2:13). Similarly, John reminds us that “when He is revealed, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is. And everyone who has this hope in Him purifies himself, just as He is pure” (1 John 3:2,3). God’s people are to live a holy life, thus having no need to fear, joyously awaiting Messiah’s glorious 2nd coming.

The Day of the Lord is designed to bring justice; all will ultimately reap in accordance with what was sown, “For the LORD of hosts will have a day of reckoning against everyone who is proud and lofty and against everyone who is lifted up” (Isa.2:12). “Behold, the day of the LORD is coming, Cruel, with fury and burning anger, To make the land a desolation; And He will exterminate its sinners from it. For the stars of heaven and their constellations Will not flash forth their light; The sun will be dark when it rises And the moon will not shed its light. Thus I will punish the world for its evil And the wicked for their iniquity; I will also put an end to the arrogance of the proud And abase the haughtiness of the ruthless” (Isa.13:9-11); “all the arrogant and every evildoer will be chaff; and the day that is coming will set them ablaze,” says the LORD of hosts” (Mal.4:1). “For the day of the LORD draws near on all the nations as you have done, it will be done to you. Your dealings will return on your own head”(Obad.1:15,16). God’s justice will be done, finally, on earth, as it is in heaven. Doesn’t that sound fair?

When Jesus Christ/Yeshua Ha-Mashiach returns, He will be coming as the Lion of Judah, not as the Lamb: “and one of the elders said to me, “Stop weeping; behold, the Lion that is from the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has overcome so as to open the book” (Rev.5:5); “on the day when, according to my gospel, God will judge the secrets of men through Christ Jesus”(Rom.2:16), when those who do not know the Lord as Saviour will run and hide “from the presence of Him who sits on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb; for the great day of their wrath has come, and who is able to stand?”(Rom.6:17), for the Messiah has returned for His own, but to those who are not His “Many will say to Me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name cast out demons, and in Your name perform many miracles?’ “And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; DEPART FROM ME, YOU WHO PRACTICE LAWLESSNESS’” (Matt.7:22,23). “He who rejects Me and does not receive My sayings, has one who judges him; the Word I spoke is what will judge him at the last day” (John 12:48).  When we speak God’s Word to declare His judgment and justice, we are often accused of judging; but let us be clear: we are only speaking His Word – speaking the truth, in love (Eph.4:15) – and it is His Word that is doing the judging. When people become oversensitive to this, it usually indicates a resistance to God’s conviction of something not right in their lives; it is not us doing the judging; neither do we condemn the individual, but God’s Word judges the behaviour, the actions, the sin, and transgressions against His Word. We leave the judgment of the individual up to the Lord.

But the judgment is for those who have rejected the Saviour. To those who have received Him: “So rejoice, O sons of Zion, And be glad in the LORD your God; For He has given you the early rain for your vindication And He has poured down for you the rain, The early and latter rain as before. The threshing floors will be full of grain, And the vats will overflow with the new wine and oil” (Joel 2:23,24). “’On that day,’ declares the LORD of hosts, ‘I will take you, Zerubbabel, son of Shealtiel, My servant,’ declares the LORD, ‘and I will make you like a signet ring, for I have chosen you,'” declares the LORD of hosts” (Hag.2:20-23). “The Lord will preserve Zerubbabel and the people of Judah, amidst their enemies. Here is also foretold the establishment and continuance of the kingdom of Christ; by union with whom his people are sealed with the Holy Ghost, sealed with his image, thus distinguished from all others. Here also is foretold the changes, even to that time when the kingdom of Christ shall overthrow and occupy the place of all the empires which opposed his cause. The promise has special reference to Christ, who descended from Zerubbabel in a direct line, and is the sole Builder of the gospel temple. Our Lord Jesus is the Signet on God’s right hand, for all power is given to him, and derived from him. By him, and in him, all the promises of God are yea and amen. Whatever changes take place on earth, all will promote the comfort, honour, and happiness of his servants” (

“Now listen, Joshua the high priest, you and your friends who are sitting in front of you–indeed they are men who are a symbol, for behold, I am going to bring in My servant the Branch” (Zech.3:8). “As the promises made to David often pass into promises of the Messiah, so the promises to Joshua look forward to Christ, of whose priesthood Joshua’s was a shadow. Whatever trials we pass through, whatever services we perform, our whole dependence must rest on Christ, the Branch of righteousness. He is God’s servant, employed in his work, obedient to his will, devoted to his honour and glory. He is the Branch from which all our fruit must be gathered. Christ shall appear for all his chosen, as the high priest when before the Lord, What should terrify when sin is taken away? Then nothing can hurt, and we sit down under Christ’s shadow with delight, and are sheltered by it” (

“Those large promises made to David in old time, that his seed would endure forever, that his throne should be as the sun before God (Psalm 89:36, 37; 2 Samuel 7:16), were now passed on to Zerubbabel and to his line, because of him was to spring Messiah, in whom alone these wide predictions find their fulfilment, “He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: and he shall reign over the house of Jacob forever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end” (Luke 1:32, 33), (; “and at that time your people, everyone who is found written in the book, will be rescued. Many of those who sleep in the dust of the ground will awake, these to everlasting life, but the others to disgrace and everlasting contempt” (Dan.12:1,2), “For this is the will of My Father, that everyone who beholds the Son and believes in Him will have eternal life, and I Myself will raise him up on the last day”(John 6:39,40). So that is why we who believe, can, and should, say (Rev.2:20), “Maranatha!” (Come quickly! Come, Lord Jesus/Yeshua, come!).
