HEBREWS 2:11

HEBREWS 2:11 FOR BOTH HE WHO SANCTIFIES AND THOSE WHO ARE BEING SANCTIFIED ARE ALL OF ONE, FOR WHICH REASON HE IS NOT ASHAMED TO CALL THEM BRETHREN

THIS IS ANOTHER EXPRESSION OF CHRIST’S DESIRE FOR UNITY, THE ONENESS, OF FATHER, SON, AND HOLY SPIRIT, EXTENDED NOW TO INCLUDE HIS DISCIPLES.

THE FATHER SANCTIFIES THE SON; THE SON SANCTIFIES BY HIS SHED BLOOD ON THE CROSS, THOSE WHO ARE TRUE BELIEVERS/FOLLOWERS/DISCIPLES. ALL SHARE NOW IN THE ONENESS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT. ALL SHARE IN THE ONENESS OF HAVING THE SAME FATHER: THE FAMILY OF GOD.

THEREFORE, AS UNWORTHY AS THE BEST OF DISCIPLES ARE, HE CAN CONSIDER THEM “BRETHREN” BECAUSE OF HIS SHED BLOOD COVERING BELIEVERS, NOT BECAUSE THEY HAVE DONE ANYTHING TO DESERVE BEING CONSIDERED “BRETHREN.” POSITIONALLY, AND POTENTIALLY, AS THE SHARED INHERITORS OF HIS HEAVENLY HOME, HE HAS MADE THIS DISTINCTION.

IT IS IMPORTANT, HOWEVER, TO REALIZE THAT THIS DOES NOT MEAN WE ARE EQUALS WITH HIM. THIS DOES NOT SANCTION ASSUMPTIONS OF OVERSTATING  THE BELIEVER’S STATUS TO THAT OF A CASUAL “FRIEND,” OVER-FAMILIARIZING AND TAKING UNWARRANTED LIBERTIES AS EQUALS, FOR HE IS STILL LORD, MASTER, AND KING OVER ALL.
