“Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour” (1 Pet.5:8). These words are a warning to all believers. There is a valid reason for Peter’s warning. The Enemy is real; and he stalks God’s people. Why would he do that, you might ask? The real question is “why wouldn’t he?”

Satan’s most effective strategy for ruining, stealing, and messing up what could become a valid testimony/witness to the unbelieving world, is to have demons positioned, assigned and instructed to watch for open doors. Believers open doors to the Enemy all the time, without even realizing it. It doesn’t take a criminal offense, nor a breech of one of the Ten Commandments, not even necessarily an observable action, to open a door to the Enemy. Your body language as well as verbal emissions reflect quite accurately what’s going on in your mind, and familiar spirits are on assignment to keep watch. They know where all your weaknesses are; they’ve been following not only you, but those who walked before you for generations. They are all too familiar with the weaknesses, patterns, and perhaps even curses which have followed all the generations, including yourself. They watch for any behaviour, verbal/nonverbal, that opens a door, and they waste no time.

The behaviours, patterns, habits, activities, verbal and nonverbal emissions, thoughts, and desires that open doors to the Enemy, provide the information needed to close those doors. It’s not that difficult to identify what types of weaknesses are in your family heritage. Once those weaknesses have been identified, the existence of dysfunctional/unhealthy behaviour patterns become revealed, and the extent, degree and intensity of life events that transpired will give evidence of existing curses (also very closely related to ungodly soul ties). Upon that evidence, then builds whatever patterns and activities you yourself have directly participated in, agreed with, and/or fostered, and allowed. Whatever the individual has been involved in that would facilitate, supplement, or agree with that is aligned with the person’s past, will serve to bring on and validated another round, locking down and sealing whatever was already there, reinstating any curses already in existence. Spiritual warfare, combined with surrender and putting flesh to death is the way to dispose of these. Having done that, the ongoing struggle is that of closing the doors against the Enemy’s return, and keeping them closed.

“But I tell you that everyone who looks upon a woman to lust after her has already committed adultery with her in his heart” (Matt.5:28). (Ladies, don’t think this doesn’t go both ways). It is evident from this statement by Yeshua that lustful desires open doors to the Enemy, and that it doesn’t even take a physical action to open a door. Weaknesses in the mind and emotions open doors; the lust will be reflected in the eyes, in other facial expressions, or in other forms of body language, even if not expressed verbally. The Enemy knows this, so demons are assigned to watch, and track individuals who have been delivered (he doesn’t just give up after the fact). The Enemy will provide opportunities to entertain the mind, titillate the senses, stimulating lustful imaginings, fantasies, luring the individual into the corresponding behaviour. Thoughts and desires are stimulated and evoked by what is seen.

As John aptly advises:  “Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For everything in the world—the desire of the flesh, the desire of the eyes, and the boasting of life—is not from the Father but from the world. The world is passing away along with its desire, but the one who does the will of God abides forever” (1 John 2:15-17). Believers must guard what they look at/watch, whether TV, movies, internet – whatever forms of entertainment that may seem harmless, anything that stimulates, triggers, incites lustful thoughts and desires provokes temptations and allurements, and can incite the corresponding behaviour. As James points out: “one is tempted when he is dragged away and enticed by his own desire. Then when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and when sin is full grown, it brings forth death” (James 1:14,15). What one allows to enter into the imaginations, fantasies, daydreams, and thoughts, will precipitate the activities that will lead to destruction. Entry of such into the emotions, desires, and thought realm opens doors to the Enemy of the soul. Opening doors serves as an invitation, giving the Enemy legal rights to enter in, in the same way that when you open your front door to someone, you have given them permission to enter into your home.

“Then I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, “Now salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of His Christ have come, for the accuser of our brethren, who accused them before our God day and night, has been cast down” (Rev.12:10). As doors are opened, the accuser strikes. Only by living a life that is rooted in self-discipline, (fruit of the Spirit) and based on God’s precepts, can one close the doors against the Enemy of the soul. Walking daily in obedience, surrender, putting flesh to death, etc. is the key.

We close the doors first by being brought into conviction. Only conviction will precipitate forgiving, confessing, repenting, and getting rid of any sinful lustful desires and/or practices in our lives:

“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9).

“For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses” (Matt.6:14,15).

“Repent and do the deeds you did at first. If not, I will come to you and remove your menorah from its place—unless you repent” (Rev.2:5).

“Flee also youthful lusts; but pursue righteousness, faith, love, peace with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart. But avoid foolish and ignorant disputes, knowing that they generate strife. And a servant of the Lord must not quarrel but be gentle to all, able to teach, patient, in humility correcting those who are in opposition . . .” (2 Tim.2:22-26).

“I have this against you, that you have left your first love. Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent and do the first works, or else I will come to you quickly and remove your lampstand from its place—unless you repent” (Rev.2:4,5).

The Enemy sends demons to watch for open doors through which to attack. That is why Paul says: “above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one” (Eph.6:16). Walking in the whole armour of God (Eph.6:10-16) will close the door against the Enemy. The fiery darts and arrows will rebound off the shield of faith (Eph.6:11) if one is wearing the whole armour daily 24/7. If the door is closed, the Enemy cannot enter; it is that simple.

The keys to closing the door against the Enemy of the soul must necessarily be followed by strategies for maintenance, which will be discussed in the next day’s Study Topic.
