LESSONS FROM EXODUS 28,  10.02.20

OFTEN WHEN STUDYING OLD TESTAMENT PROCEDURES, IT IS EVIDENT THAT THEY WERE PRECURSORS, OR PRELUDES TO EVENTS AND OCCURRENCES IN THE NEW TESTAMENT THAT SUPPLEMENTED, AND/OR REPLACED THE NEED TO FOLLOW THE ORIGINAL RITUALS, SUCH AS THE SACRIFICING OF ANIMALS HAVING BEEN REPLACED BY THE ULTIMATE, ONE AND ONLY PERFECT SACRIFICE.

We know, for instance, that inasmuchas Heb. 8:6 informs us that “we have a better covenant,”  THERE IS MUCH TO BE GLEANED FROM STUDYING THE ORIGINAL RITUALS, SINCE THEY SERVE TO MAKE DEEPER MEANINGS, CONNECTING GOD’S ORIGINAL COVENANT WITH THE ULTIMATE OUTCOME OF JESUS/YESHUA’S APPEARANCE ON THE SCENE, AND WHAT HIS ULTIMATE RETURN WILL MEAN FOR BELIEVERS. ADDITIONALLY AND ULTIMATELY, EVERY CONNECTION MADE, ONLY VALIDATES AND SERVES TO STRENGTHEN OUR OWN PERSONAL CONNECTION TO OUR COVENANT WITH OUR LORD AND SAVIOUR, FOR HIS PRINCIPLES OF HOLINESS DO NOT CHANGE – i.e., EVEN THOUGH WE MAY NOT NEED TO FOLLOW THE SPECIFIC INSTRUCTIONS FOR BUILDING THE TABERNACLE OR THE ARK OF THE COVENANT OR THE SACRED GARMENTS FOR PRIESTS, THEY SERVE TO INFORM US OF THE IMPORTANCE OF OUR DEFERENCE TO HIS WAYS, OF THE CALL TO REVERENCE AND HOLINESS, OF OUR CALL TO COMPLETE SURRENDER TO OUR LORD.

IDENTIFYING SUCH PARALLELS,  LOOKING FOR LESSONS AND PRINCIPLES THAT APPLY TO OUR WALK WITH THE LORD SERVE TO DRAW ATTENTION TO OUR WALK. DISCOVERING SYMBOLS, ANALOGIES AND PARALLELS BETWEEN OLD TESTAMENT AND NEW TESTAMENT ARE ALSO VALUABLE IN DEVELOPING A PERSPECTIVE OF THE BIGGER PICTURE, AND THE CONTINUITY FROM OLD COVENANT TO NEW – i.e., rituals, etc. may be altered but the underlying PRINCIPLES remain the same. JUST AS JESUS/YESHUA CAME TO REVEAL THE FATHER, SO ALSO DOES THE OLD COVENANT UNDERGIRD THAT OF THE NEW.

LET US STUDY THIS SET OF SCRIPTURE WITH A VIEW TO MAKE MORE MEANING and TO OBSERVE THE CYCLICAL NATURE OF GOD’S COVENANT, FROM OLD TO NEW.

STUDY THE FOLLOWING:

EXODUS 28:

1 “Call for your brother, Aaron, and his sons, Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar. Set them apart from the rest of the people of Israel so they may minister to me and be my priests.

2 Make sacred garments for Aaron that are glorious and beautiful.

3 Instruct all the skilled craftsmen whom I have filled with the spirit of wisdom. Have them make garments for Aaron that will distinguish him as a priest set apart for my service.

4 These are the garments they are to make: a chestpiece, an ephod, a robe, a patterned tunic, a turban, and a sash. They are to make these sacred garments for your brother, Aaron, and his sons to wear when they serve me as priests.

5 So give them fine linen cloth, gold thread, and blue, purple, and scarlet thread.

6 “The craftsmen must make the ephod of finely woven linen and skillfully embroider it with gold and with blue, purple, and scarlet thread.

7 It will consist of two pieces, front and back, joined at the shoulders with two shoulder-pieces.

8 The decorative sash will be made of the same materials: finely woven linen embroidered with gold and with blue, purple, and scarlet thread.

9 “Take two onyx stones, and engrave on them the names of the tribes of Israel.

10 Six names will be on each stone, arranged in the order of the births of the original sons of Israel.

11 Engrave these names on the two stones in the same way a jeweler engraves a seal. Then mount the stones in settings of gold filigree.

12 Fasten the two stones on the shoulder-pieces of the ephod as a reminder that Aaron represents the people of Israel. Aaron will carry these names on his shoulders as a constant reminder whenever he goes before the Lord.

13 Make the settings of gold filigree,

14 then braid two cords of pure gold and attach them to the filigree settings on the shoulders of the ephod.

15 “Then, with great skill and care, make a chestpiece to be worn for seeking a decision from God.  Make it to match the ephod, using finely woven linen embroidered with gold and with blue, purple, and scarlet thread.

16 Make the chestpiece of a single piece of cloth folded to form a pouch nine inches square.

17 Mount four rows of gemstones on it. The first row will contain a red carnelian, a pale-green peridot, and an emerald.

18 The second row will contain a turquoise, a blue lapis lazuli, and a white moonstone. 19 The third row will contain an orange jacinth, an agate, and a purple amethyst.

20 The fourth row will contain a blue-green beryl, an onyx, and a green jasper. All these stones will be set in gold filigree.

21 Each stone will represent one of the twelve sons of Israel, and the name of that tribe will be engraved on it like a seal.

HEBREWS 8:

Christ Is Our High Priest

8 Here is the main point: We have a High Priest who sat down in the place of honour beside the throne of the majestic God in heaven.

2 There he ministers in the heavenly Tabernacle, the true place of worship that was built by the Lord and not by human hands.

3 And since every high priest is required to offer gifts and sacrifices, our High Priest must make an offering, too.

4 If he were here on earth, he would not even be a priest, since there already are priests who offer the gifts required by the law.

5 They serve in a system of worship that is only a copy, a shadow of the real one in heaven. For when Moses was getting ready to build the Tabernacle, God gave him this warning: “Be sure that you make everything according to the pattern I have shown you here on the mountain.”

6 But now Jesus, our High Priest, has been given a ministry that is far superior to the old priesthood, for he is the one who mediates for us a far better covenant with God, based on better promises.

7 If the first covenant had been faultless, there would have been no need for a second covenant to replace it.

FROM HEB. 8:2,5, WE CAN SEE HOW THE SACRIFICES, AND SPECIFICATIONS OF THE TABERNACLE, ALTAR, ARK OF THE COVENANT WERE A FORESHADOWING OF THE FULFILLMENT OF THE BLOOD COVENANT REQUIREMENTS BY JESUS/YESHUA AND HOW THOSE ARE NO LONGER NECESSARY.  AT THE SAME TIME, IT DOES NOT UNDERMINE THE NEED FOR HONOURING GOD BY LIVING IN ACCORDANCE WITH HIS WAYS, STANDARDS, PRECEPTS, AND COMMANDMENTS.

IN-AS-MUCH-AS HEBREWS 8:6 INFORMS US THAT WE HAVE A “better covenant with God, based on better promises,” WE STILL BENEFIT FROM UNDERSTANDING THE WAYS IN WHICH OLD AND NEW FIT TOGETHER, THE OLD UNDERGIRDING THE NEW, FOR THE BASIC TENETS/PRINCIPLES REMAIN INTACT, AS GOD HIMSELF AND WHAT IS IMPORTANT TO HIM, DOES NOT CHANGE.
