I CORINTHIANS 14:1

I CORINTHIANS 14:1
Pursue love, and desire spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy.

PAUL IS UPHOLDING THE VALIDITY OF PROPHECY, AND ALL SPIRITUAL GIFTS, EMPHASIZING THE PURSUIT OF “LOVE.”

HE PROCEEDS TO EXPLAIN THE MERITS OF PROPHECY, THAT IT IS FOR EDIFICATION AND EXHORTATION, TO COMFORT FELLOW BELIEVERS. THERE ARE OTHER GIFTS, SUCH AS SPEAKING IN TONGUES, WHICH ARE MORE SELF-SERVING, AND THUS ARE NOT A PRIORITY.

THE REFERENCE TO “LOVE,” IS CARRIED FORWARD FROM THE PREVIOUS CHAPTER/LETTER, WHERE PAUL ENDS WITH SAYING THAT THE GREATEST OF ALL (THE GIFTS) IS “LOVE.” BY THE WAY, HE IS NOT TALKING ABOUT ROMANTIC LOVE HERE (SORRY FOLKS), BUT RATHER ABOUT LOVE FOR FELLOW BELIEVERS AND OTHER HUMAN BEINGS. IT IS, OF COURSE A COMMANDMENT THAT WE LOVE OUR NEIGHBOUR AS OURSELVES.

IT IS IMPORTANT THAT WE SET OUR PRIORITIES IN ACCORDANCE WITH GOD’S WORD, AND NOT OUR OWN LITTLE WHIMS AND WISHES. OBVIOUSLY, ANY WORD OF ADVICE, ENCOURAGEMENT, OR EVEN SUGGESTION, THAT IS IN LINE WITH GOD’S COMMANDMENTS SHOULD WITHOUT QUESTION, BE OUR PRIORITY.
