WALK IN DAILY SURRENDER, 22.11.19

What does daily surrender look like? What does walking in surrender daily actually involve? Many are of the belief that all one need do is say the prayer of salvation, the “Come into my heart, Lord Jesus/Yeshua,” prayer, and say “I surrender my life to You,” and it’s all done, a fete accomplis, if you would.

As long as we remain creatures in the world, our flesh is still with us. As long as our flesh is still with us, it battles from within, competing with the Holy Spirit for supremacy. It’s exactly what Paul referred to when he said: “For I know that nothing good dwells in me—that is, in my flesh. For to will is present in me, but to do the good is not. For the good that I want, I do not do; but the evil that I do not want, this I practice. But if I do what I do not want, it is no longer I doing it, but sin that dwells in me. So I find the principle—that evil is present in me” (Rom.7:18-21). And exactly the reason, also, that Yeshua said, “If anyone wants to follow Me, he must deny himself, take up his cross every day, and follow Me” (Lk.9:23). Every day, we must die to self*. Every day, by an act of will, we must put our flesh to death*, in order to choose to walk as Yeshua walked, to live the surrendered life.

It means committing every thought, desire; every action, interaction, choice, and decision, every step, every body part, to Him. It means putting first all things of the Kingdom, of how He wants us to live, over and above our own desires, wants, dreams, and goals, “bringing your thoughts captive unto the obedience of Messiah” (2 Cor.10:5). Yes, it means surrendering our dreams, and desires, too, for our dreams do not count unless they come from the Lord. Everything we want and think needs to be put within that framework, for “Unless Adonai builds the house, the builders labor in vain” (Ps.127:1). When we commit, and surrender every aspect of our lives to Him, to His will, to His ways, to His work, He will put the right thoughts in our mind, upon which we need to proceed: “because the Ruach ha-Kodesh will teach you at that time what is necessary to say”(Lk.12:12); and “Commit whatever you do to Adonai, and your plans will succeed” (Prov.16:3).

“Just as Jesus had to sacrifice all to be wholly an offering to God, so all His people – from Abraham, Jacob, and Joseph to His twelve disciples to today’s believers – have had to give up all to follow the divine leading, and have lived separated unto God, before the divine power could fulfill God’s purposes through them” (Murray, 1998; p.142). Lives so fully surrendered that His will/ways, being wholly unto Him, consumes us, these are the goals He desires for His people. When we surrender completely each day, when we follow His lead, when we are able to listen and obey, like the young boy, Samuel, who said: “Speak, for Your servant is listening”(1 Sam.3:10), then we are living in the midst of His will. When we live in the midst of His will that’s when nothing can touch us, for Adonai says, “Touch not My anointed ones, and do My prophets no harm” (Ps.105:15).

Total daily surrender says: “I do nothing of myself, but only that which the Father shows me to do” (John 5:19, paraphrased); “I can do nothing on My own. . . . . . I do not seek My own will, but the will of the One who sent Me” (John 5:30). We need to be able to say: “I do nothing by Myself, but speak just what the Father has taught Me. The One who sent Me is with Me. He has not left Me alone, because I always do what is pleasing to Him” (John 8:28,29). Yeshua lived the perfectly surrendered life. He sent His Holy Spirit to dwell within those who would believe: “These things I have spoken to you while dwelling with you. But the Helper, the Ruach ha-Kodesh whom the Father will send in My name, will teach you everything and remind you of everything that I said to you” (John 14:25,26), to enable, to empower us to walk as He walked, for “if the Ruach of the One who raised Yeshua from the dead dwells in you, the One who raised Messiah Yeshua from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Ruach who dwells in you” (Rom.8:11).

Yeshua did only those things which pleased the Father, which were assigned, directed, commissioned by Him. Let us follow His model and do likewise, so we may walk in daily surrender and know we are in the midst of His will. If we do this we will not only walk in surrender, but live in His Shalom: “Shalom I leave you, My shalom I give to you; but not as the world gives! Do not let your heart be troubled or afraid” (John 14:27).
