“Therefore, since we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Divine Nature is like gold or silver or stone, something shaped by art and man’s devising.”

CONTEXT IS EVERYTHING HERE . . . .

PAUL HAS BEEN PREACHING THE GOSPEL OF CHRIST IN ATHENS, AND DISCOVERED AN ALTAR MARKED “TO THE UNKNOWN GOD,” REPRESENTING THE HEBREW GOD OF WHOM THEY HAD NO CLEAR UNDERSTANDING, BUT NEVERTHELESS INCLUDED AMONGST THE MANY “GODS” THEY WORSHIPPED.

PAUL WAS MAKING THE POINT THAT THE HEBREW GOD, UNLIKE THEIR “GODS” MADE OF GOLD, SILVER, STONE, WOOD, OROTHER MATERIAL, WAS NOT MADE BY HUMAN HANDS AND WAS NOT AN INANIMATE OBJECT AS THEIRS WERE; BUT QUITE UNIQUE IN HIS DIVINE NATURE.

JUST AS PAUL PREACHED THE GOSPEL TO THESE HELLENISTIC, NEW AGERS, SO WE ALSO NEED TO BE READY TO SHARE THE GOSPEL WITH OUR PRESENT-DAY “NEW AGERS” NOT MUCH DIFFERENT FROM THE ONES WHO WALKED THE EARTH AT THAT TIME. WE MUST BE READY AND WILLING TO SHARE OUR FAITH/TRUTH TO WHOMEVER THE LORD PLACES BEFORE US.
