PSALM 16:9

DAILY DEVOTIONAL, THURSDAY, MAY 9, 2019

Therefore my heart is glad, and my glory rejoices;

My flesh also will rest in hope.

WHILE AN EXPRESSION OF DAVID’S TRUST IN GOD, PSALM 16 IS AN INTERESTING COMBINATION OF THE PSALMIST’S TRUST, AND THE PROPHETIC FUTURE HOPE OF MESSIAH.

IF WE STUDY THE WHOLE PSALM TO PUT IT IN PERSPECTIVE AND GIVE IT THE RIGHT CONTEXT, IT IS CLEAR FROM VERSE 10 THAT THIS IS A PROPHETIC WORD REGARDING JESUS ON THE CROSS, GOING TO A TEMPORARY PLACE OF DEATH, WHILE KNOWING THAT HE WILL NOT BE LEFT IN SHEUL/DARKNESS; HIS BODY WILL NOT BE LEFT TO CORRUPTION.

ALTHOUGH THE PSALMIST SEES IN THIS HIS ULTIMATE REDEMPTION, HE DOES NOT OF COURSE UNDERSTAND THE FUTURE COURSE OF EVENTS, ONLY THE ASSURANCE THAT HE CAN HOPE FOR A LIFE IN ETERNITY WITH THE LORD.

ONE OF THE LESSONS WE SHOULD HAPPILY TAKE AWAY FROM THIS, IS THAT IF DAVID COULD REACH THIS CONCLUSION, EVEN PRECEDING THE COMING OF MESSIAH, WITHOUT HAVING HAD THE BENEFIT OF EXPERIENCING MESSIAH’S PRESENCE AS THE DISCIPLES DID, NOR EVEN AS WE HAVE DUE TO THE PRIVILEGE OF HAVING THE WRITTEN RECORDS DOCUMENTED FOR OUR BENEFIT, HOW MUCH MORE SHOULD OUR FAITH AND HOPE REST IN THE LORD’S PROMISES? HE EXUDES SUCH AN AROMA OF PEACE . . ..   WE SHOULD SO MUCH MORE BE AT PEACE.
