VERNA’S DAILY DEVOTIONAL, MONDAY MAY 13, 2019

I SAMUEL 26:24

“And indeed, as your life was valued much this day in my eyes, so let my life be valued much in the eyes of the Lord, and let Him deliver me out of all tribulation.”

THIS VERSE IS MEANINGLESS WITHOUT CONTEXT.

DAVID HAS JUST PASSED UP AN OPPORTUNITY TO AVENGE KING SAUL’S UNJUST PURSUIT OF HIM, SAUL ATTEMPTING TO KILL DAVID AT EVERY TURN IN THE ROCKS AND CAVES . . ..

SO AFTER SPARING KING SAUL’S LIFE (FOR THE SECOND OR THIRD TIME), HE MAKES A STATEMENT THAT IS ESSENTIALLY A PRAYER.

GOD HONOURS THESE WORDS. DAVID’S PRAYER IS ANSWERED VERY CLEARLY WHEN, AS SAUL’S PURSUIT CONTINUES, GOD CONTINUES TO PROTECT HIM. DAVID’S LIFE IS HIGHLY VALUED BY THE LORD GOD OF ABRAHAM, ISAAC, AND JACOB, AND HE IS SPARED MUCH TRIBULATION, ALTHOUGH HE CERTAINLY HAS TO ENDURE MUCH HARDSHIP THROUGHOUT.

PERHAPS THERE IS AN IMPORTANT PRINCIPLE HERE, ENCASED IN THE OPENING LINE, (“as your life was valued much this day in my eyes”), FOR IT IS WHEN WE ARE FAITHFUL, LOYAL, OBEDIENT TO FOLLOW GOD’S WAYS, PUTTING OTHERS BEFORE SELF, CERTAINLY WHEN WE HONOUR GOD’S “ANOINTED” (AND SAUL WAS ANOINTED BY GOD, WHETHER WE THINK HE DESERVED IT OR NOT, GOD HAD CHOSEN HIM TO BE KING FOR THAT TIME THAT HE WAS KING), AS WE VALUE OTHERS, GOD WILL VALUE AND HONOUR US/OUR LIVES, ALSO.
