1 CORINTHIANS 9:9,10

“You shall not muzzle an ox while it treads out the grain.” Is it oxen God is concerned about? 10 Or does He say it altogether for our sakes? For our sakes, no doubt, this is written, that he who plows should plow in hope, and he who threshes in hope should be partaker of his hope.

WE ALL DO WHAT WE DO IN HOPES OF SOME TYPE OF REWARD, WHETHER FINANCIAL, MATERIAL, OR OTHERWISE.

PAUL IS ADDRESSING THE BENEFIT OF PUTTING SUCH EXPECTATIONS ASIDE IN ORDER TO PUT EVERYTHING ONE DOES FOR THE KINGDOM, FIRST. IT IS MORE IMPORTANT TO BE AND TO DO WHATEVER THE SITUATION CALLS FOR, THAN TO FOCUS ON THE INSTANT GRATIFICATION OF WHAT ONE HAS EARNED.

PUTTING IT INTO PERSPECTIVE, IF BY TAKING SOME FORM OF PAYMENT, IT SHOULD REFLECT UNFAVOURABLY UPON US/THE GOSPEL, THEN WE MUST CHOOSE FOR WHAT WILL BE DONE TO GOD’S GLORY, AND TO THE FULLEST EXTENT, RATHER THAN FOR PERSONAL GAIN/GLORY.

USING THE EXAMPLE OF OXEN, HE POINTS OUT THAT THERE IS A PRINCIPLE HERE FOR HUMANKIND. YES, ONE HAS THE “RIGHT” TO ENJOY THE “FRUITS OF ONE’S LABOUR;” HOWEVER, HE POINTS OUT THAT JUST BECAUSE ONE “CAN,” DOESN’T MEAN ONE ALWAYS “SHOULD” INDULGE IN SUCH LIBERTIES. POINTING TO HIMSELF AS AN EXAMPLE, ALTHOUGH PAUL HIMSELF COULD RIGHTFULLY EXPECT TO BE SUPPORTED FINANCIALLY BY ALL THOSE HE SO FAITHFULLY SERVES, HE CHOOSES NOT TO, IN ORDER TO NOT RISK BEING A HINDRANCE TO THE GOSPEL OF CHRIST.

YES, EVERYONE WHO WORKS IN WHATEVER FORM, IS ENTITLED TO SOME FORM OF REWARD; BUT FROM PAUL’S PERSPECTIVE, THE GOSPEL UNHINDERED IS MORE IMPORTANT; AND HE WILL RECEIVE HIS REWARD FROM THE FATHER. HE WILL RECEIVE AN “IMPERISHABLE CROWN.”

WE ALL WOULD DO WELL TO HAVE SOME OF THIS PERSPECTIVE IN OUR LIVES. WE WILL BE REWARDED IN ACCORDANCE WITH WHAT WAS DONE FROM THE HEART FOR THE GLORY OF GOD AND HIS KINGDOM. THOSE ETERNAL REWARDS ARE WORTH FAR MORE THAN ALL THE TEMPORARY REWARDS IN THIS LIFE.
