DEUTERONOMY 28:2

And all these blessings shall come upon you and overtake you, because you obey the voice of the Lord your God:

CONTEXT IS ALWAYS ESSENTIAL WHEN STUDYING SCRIPTURE. AND IT IS EVIDENT IN THIS PARTICULAR PASSAGE JUST HOW TRUE THIS IS.

WITHOUT GOING FURTHER, ONE IS LEFT WONDERING WHAT “ALL THESE BLESSINGS” ARE WHICH SHALL COME UPON ONE AND OVERTAKE THEM. SECONDLY, ONE IS LEFT WONDERING WHAT THE IMPORTANCE OF OBEYING THE VOICE OF THE LORD IS ALL ABOUT.

SO BACKING UP TO THE PREVIOUS PASSAGE, WE NOTE THAT HE HAS ALREADY SUMMARIZED THE BLESSINGS IN A GENERAL FORM, AND THEN FOLLOWING THIS PASSAGE THEY ARE BROKEN DOWN INTO A LIST OF VERY SPECIFIC BLESSINGS. AND IF WE LOOK AT THE STIPULATION IN THE FIRST VERSE, WE SEE THAT IT HAS BEEN RESTATED IN THIS VERSE WE ARE STUDYING HERE – i.e., “IF” WE LISTEN, AND “IF” WE OBEY THE VOICE OF THE LORD, THEN, AND ONLY THEN DO THESE BLESSINGS APPLY.

MANY PLACES THROUGHOUT SCRIPTURE MAKE IT CLEAR THAT THERE ARE CONDITIONS REFERRED TO IN MOST INSTANCES OF BLESSINGS. GOD’S BLESSINGS ARE NOT EQUALLY DISPENSED, ALTHOUGH THERE ARE UNIVERSAL BLESSINGS IN A GENERIC SENSE (AS IN GOD MAKING PROVISION FOR ALL HIS CREATION FOR FOOD SOURCES, RAIN, SUNSHINE, ETC.); HOWEVER, INDIVIDUALLY, OR IN UNITS OF PEOPLE GROUPS, BLESSINGS USUALLY REQUIRE SUBMISSION, OBEDIENCE, REVERENCE AND FAITHFULNESS TO OUR CREATOR.
