MYSTERIES OF GOD, 14.03.19

God never promised to explain or justify His decisions to humankind. At no point throughout Scripture does He offer an apology to anyone for bad things that happen. He dispenses judgement, discipline, and blessings, all at His sovereign will, without explanation or apology. He provides life, and He removes life, as He chooses, at His will, and His timing. He dispenses judgment, adversity, storms, discipline, as well as blessings, all at His sovereign will and timing.

A study of Job will quickly confirm these truths: “Then the Lord answered Job out of the whirlwind, and said: “Now prepare yourself like a man; I will question you, and you shall answer Me: “Would you indeed annul My judgment? Would you condemn Me that you may be justified? Have you an arm like God? Or can you thunder with a voice like His?” (Job 40:6-9). God pretty much put Job in his place – i.e., “Who are you to question Me?”  Yahweh is the Great-I-Am; He owes us no explanation; He owes us nothing. We owe Him everything: Thus says God the Lord, Who created the heavens and stretched them out, Who spread forth the earth and that which comes from it, Who gives breath to the people on it, And spirit to those who walk on it” (Isa.42:5). From the moment He breathed life into Adam, He passed that breath on to each one born thereafter, reserving the right to provide and remove life, as He chooses: “Naked came I out of my mother’s womb, and naked shall I return thither: the Lord gave, and the Lord hath taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord” (Job 1:21).

In Isaiah 55, Yahweh tells us through Isaiah, ““For My thoughts are not your thoughts, Nor are your ways My ways,” says the Lord. “For as the heavens are higher than the earth, So are My ways higher than your ways, And My thoughts than your thoughts” (v.8,9). Once again, God offers no explanation, no apology; He simply states that we should not expect Him to operate according to our expectations, assumptions, or analyses.  “Can you find out the deep things of God? Can you find out the limit of the Almighty? It is higher than heaven—what can you do? Deeper than Sheol—what can you know? Its measure is longer than the earth and broader than the sea”(Job 11:7-9). In Amos 7:10, the prophet is basically saying that information has been withheld from the Israelites because “the land is not able to bear all His words.” In the same way, Yahweh withholds from us those things which would be incomprehensible to us.

“Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed! Yeshua performed many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book. But these things have been written so that you may believe that Yeshua is Mashiach Ben-Elohim, and that by believing you may have life in His name” (John 20:29-31). These passages indicate that we have been given as much as needed to believe, and understand that Jesus/Yeshua is the Messiah, and follow Him. When the disciples were inquiring whether John was not going to actually experience death, but be taken up as Elijah was, Yeshua said to him, “If I want him to remain until I come, what is that to you? You follow Me!”” (John 21:22). This is very directive, curt, even corrective, as Yeshua is basically saying: “It’s irrelevant and none of your concern,” admonishing them for being preoccupied with the wrong focus. “Therefore this saying went out among the brothers and sisters, that this disciple would not die. Yet Yeshua did not say to him that he would not die, but, “If I want him to remain until I come, what is that to you?” {notice how Yeshua withheld the information requested} This is the disciple who is an eyewitness of these things and wrote these things. We know that his testimony is true. There are also many other things that Yeshua did. If all of them were to be written one by one, I suppose that not even the world itself will have room for the books being written!”(John 21:23-25).

These passages provide still more poignant substantiation that: (a) It is irrelevant whether we comprehend, or agree with God’s decisions; (b) God has no sense of obligation to explain, justify, or appease our failure to comprehend; (c) God provides us with as much information as required; (d) Even when specifically asked by His disciples, He does not always/indiscriminately provide answers; (e) If He were to have given us all the information He could, it would fill more books than we could accommodate. Perhaps this is also His way of having us seek Him, seek truth, surrender, rely on Him, and grow our faith, for if we understood and knew everything, then we would not need to depend on Him as we do.

There is a parallel here, also, with Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. Yahweh told them that they could not eat of the “tree of the knowledge of good and evil” (Gen.2:17). And Satan, through the snake, tempted, saying: “For God knows that in the day you eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and you shall be as gods, knowing good and evil” (Gen.3:5). Just as Adam and Eve had a desire to have knowledge equal to God’s, so we continue to strive to acquire likewise. But that was never Yahweh’s plan: “Loved ones, now we are God’s children; and it has not yet been revealed what we will be. But we do know that when it’s revealed, we shall be like Him, because we will see Him just as He is” (I John 3:2) –  further substantiation that we will not know everything until we are brought into the heavenlies with our glorified bodies and truly become like Yeshua Messiah/Christ Jesus. And should it not be sufficient for us to bask in knowing that when all is said and done, “we shall be like Him”? “For our citizenship is in heaven, and from there we eagerly wait for the Savior, the Lord Yeshua the Messiah. He will transform this humble body of ours into the likeness of His glorious body, through the power that enables Him even to put all things in subjection to Himself” (Phil.3:20,21). And that is one of the greatest, and most exciting, mysteries of all.
