GOD’S COVERING, 14.03.19

From Genesis to Revelation, Yahweh has always provided exclusive protection for those who walked with Him: “Do not fear, Abram. I am your shield . . ” (Gen.15:1); “For You, O Lord, will bless the righteous; With favor You will surround him as with a shield” (Ps.5:12). The one who overcomes thus will be dressed in white clothes; I will never blot his name out of the Book of Life” (Rev.3:5); “Because you have kept My word about patient endurance, I will also keep you from the hour of trial” (Rev.3:10). God is GOOD; He covers us. But we can lose that covering if we are not walking according to His Ways.

We can, like the Psalmist, be protected, covered, rescued, and secured when we are walking rightly before Him, living in that place of intimacy, obedience, and daily surrender: “The Lord rewarded me according to my righteousness; According to the cleanness of my hands He has recompensed me. For I have kept the ways of the Lord, And have not wickedly departed from my God” (Ps.18:20,21). It is then that He will so cover us, defending us, just as the Psalmist experienced: “At Your rebuke, O Lord, At the blast of the breath of Your nostrils. He sent from above, He took me; He drew me out of many waters. He delivered me from my strong enemy” (Ps.18:15-17). It is then that His coverage is unwavering and limitless.

Although this is not a popular teaching, God’s covering IS CONDITIONAL. Notice in the very passage quoted (above), that His promise to “keep you from the hour of trial” is dependent upon two things: (a) the keeping of His Word; and (b) patient endurance. In Psalm 91, it is clear that all the promises which follow the initial statement, are conditional to that statement. “He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High Shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty” (Ps.91:1). Get this very clearly: He does NOT say that if you say/declare/speak that you “dwell in the secret place” that all the following promises apply to you. He is saying that you must dwell there. Dwelling/abiding is a choice; and it requires action. It means you “reside, live, lodge, and are settled” there, not just bopping in and out, occasionally visiting there; you are making His secret place your home. Your behaviour is reflective of your dwelling place.

“HE WHO DWELLS IN THE SECRET PLACE of THE MOST HIGH, ABIDES UNDER THE SHADOW OF THE ALMIGHTY.” (Ps.91:1)

And what constitutes that secret place? Yeshua defines that place when He says: “Abide in Me, and I in you  . . . If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you. By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit; so you will be My disciples” (John 15:4,7,8). Abiding in = being ONE with Him. This substantiates the necessary condition of intimacy/oneness/abiding in (to dwell in/remain in, https://www.biblestudytools.com/dictionary/abide/ ) in order to qualify as His disciple, and thus receive that which you ask for.

Further to this, He states: If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love,”(John 15:10), specifying that abiding/living/dwelling in His Love is hinged to keeping His commandments. “You are My friends if you do whatever I command you” (John 15:14). Notice that small but most important little word, “if” in each of these statements. You are only His friend “if” you do “whatever He commands you;” and “whatever He commands you” is not referring only to the 10 Commandments, but also to  those things which He instructs/reveals/shows you to do in order to follow Him. Dwelling in/abiding in the secret place requires obedience in ALL areas of life/one’s walk.

“He who has My commandments and keeps  . . . .  loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and manifest Myself to him”(John 14:21-23). Notice that you must not only have His commandments, or know what they are; but you must also keep/follow/walk in them. Then and only then does the promise to love and manifest Himself to us become activated. And this is an integral part of dwelling in the secret place (Ps.91:1).

Notice how the two following sets of Scripture (one from OT, and the other from NT), parallel, complement, and reinforce each other: The Psalmist says that if you have “made the Lord, who is my refuge,” (Ps.91:9) “your dwelling place,” then “No evil shall befall you . . .  angels will protect you . . . .” (Ps.91:10-12). Only if you have set your love upon Him, does He promise to deliver you; only if you acknowledge Who He is, and love Him, will He then answer when you call, be with you in trouble, and honour you (Ps.91:14,15). Likewise, Yeshua promises that:“If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home with him” (John 14:23). He does not promise to come to/make His home with, anyone other than those who love Him and keep His Word.

These are those who live in the secret place, who surrender their desires, minds, hearts, works, and lives to Him, walking in His ways, keeping His Word, and allowing Him to live in and through them, who will abide under the shadow of His Wing, enjoying the 24/7 coverage of His protection and blessings.
