Following in the footsteps of The Master is truly a heart issue. We are called by His Love, by His Holy Spirit, and our hearts must be aligned with that call, in order to actually walk in His footsteps. There must be a true heart’s desire to follow Him.

So it is that we, as His people, His children, His Sons and Daughters, His Servants, are called by name, to follow His precepts, commandments, to honour/be faithful to His Word, to LOVE Him/His Word, and be led by His Holy Spirit, not by a temporary burst of emotions. We must mature through the process of sanctification and transformation, that we may return His love by allowing Him to work on and through us. We are called to love others, but to hate evil. We are called to follow in the footsteps of Jesus/Yeshua, to take up our cross and follow Him. This requires surrender, the emptying out of self, being totally sold out to Him, being “transformed by the renewing of our minds” (Rom.12:2), cleansed and washed by the Word (Eph.5:26), in order that we might walk as He walked, for He Whom we are to model was SINLESS. And let’s get something straight here: Jesus was NOT eating and drinking with sinners in a self-indulgent way, participating in drunkenness, vulgarity, and lust, as is depicted by many false teachers. He traversed among the masses, yes – to MINISTER healing, deliverance, and teaching people about the Kingdom of God, leading them to eternal life with Him. Please, God’s leaders/people, STOP misinterpreting God’s Word, twisting, distorting, defiling, even blaspheming what Jesus/Yeshua was doing when He ministered to the down-and-out. STOP making it look as though He deliberately sought out the company of whores and drunkards.

The Father placed in His pathway those individuals He had pre-ordained for Messiah to bring into the Kingdom; and, as He said: “I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance” (Lk.5:32). Does that sound like He was joining them in their sin?! No!! He was leading them to repentance!!! Do you suppose He could lead them to repentance, if He were joining them in lustful activities? Please, stop looking for ways to excuse sinful behaviour and activities. Yeshua/Jesus instructed people to come out of the world, not join it. No more can one lead someone to repentance by joining in behaviour which requires repentance, than one can join an alcoholic in their indulgence, and expect to lead them to sobriety!

We need clean hearts to follow our Lord and Master. We need hearts that burn with passion to be like Him, not like the world. We need that desire (https://youtu.be/yYw2Q141thM ), expressed to well by Misty Edwards’ “Strings of My Heart.”  We need to desire to be a man/woman after God’s heart, like King David was (1 Sam. 13:14). “The Same Love that set the captives free,” is the love of Christ that calls us to repentance and delivers us from iniquity/sin, calling us to a higher standard, to walk in His ways, His precepts, His footprints, His Word, His Righteousness, not sanctioning a sinful lifestyle.

Psalm 23 really depicts this walk of trust, surrender, and total dependency on the Lord. King David, upon his repentance, exemplified such a walk of obedience, trust, and faithfulness that can only come from the heart, portraying so aptly when he says “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; For You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me,” (Ps.23:4) what Jesus/Yeshua later lived out. David knew what God’s discipline and consequences looked like, probably better than anyone else.

When David prayed, “Search me, O God, and know my heart. Examine me, and know my anxious thoughts, and see if there be any offensive way within me, and lead me in the way everlasting”(Ps.139:23,24), he was open to conviction, so he could make right anything he had done in error, that he would maintain relationship/right standing before/with the Father. We need to assume that posture, that same heart attitude, seeking conviction rather than dreading it and trying to avoid it. We need to ask for revelation and conviction of those places in our hearts that have become hardened, asking Him to circumcise our hearts of all hardened areas and stiffneckedness (Deut.10:16: “Circumcise the foreskin of your heart therefore, and do not be stiff-necked anymore”), for “Who may go up on the mountain of Adonai? Who may stand in His holy place? One with clean hands and a pure heart . . . . . He will receive a blessing from Adonai . . . . .  Such is the generation seeking Him” (Ps.24:3-6).

Before God’s people waste their time naming and claiming His blessings, they would do well to familiarize themselves with the preconditions to such claims. We need to know God’s Word, and walk in it, to get our hearts right before Him. Without clean hands and a pure heart it is impossible to walk in the footsteps of Jesus/Yeshua, for His every word and step was flawless, sinless, pure, and perfect; and He said “Therefore be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect” (Matt.5:48). When will God’s people stop making excuses for not emulating Messiah’s behaviour, shining His Light? The blood of Yeshua purifies us; now we must repent/fully turn from all those things that prevent us from walking as Yeshua walked, and shining His light.

“I know, my God, that You search the heart and take pleasure in uprightness. With integrity of heart I have willingly offered all these things” (1 Chron.29:17); and he goes on to intercede for his son: “As for my son Solomon, give him a whole heart to keep Your mitzvot, Your decrees and Your statutes, and to fulfill them all and to build the Temple for which I have made provision”(1 Chron.29:19), which  further demonstrates his heart of passion to follow God, and for his son to do likewise. As King David commissioned his son, Solomon, “Now you, Solomon my son, know the God of your father and serve Him with a whole heart and with a willing mind; for Adonai searches all hearts and understands every intent of the thoughts. If you seek Him, He will be found by you. But if you forsake Him, He will reject you forever. Consider now, for Adonai has chosen you . . .” (1 Chron.28:9.10), may we do likewise.

Following Yeshua/Jesus is truly a matter of the heart. It cannot be done out of the flesh, but only by the power of the Holy Spirit which, if we are truly born again, we have: “if Messiah is in you, though the body is dead because of sin, yet the Spirit is alive because of righteousness. And if the Ruach of the One who raised Yeshua from the dead dwells in you, the One who raised Messiah Yeshua from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Ruach who dwells in you” (Rom.8:10,11); and “I can do all things through Messiah who strengthens me” (Phil.4:13).
