BREAKING GOD’S LAWS, 26.03.19
Breaking God’s Laws, straying from His pathway, dishonouring Him/His Ways constitutes “sin.” From Genesis to Revelation, we can see that Yahweh’s definition of sin remains intact. Although there is a post-modernist trend to downplay the importance/impact of sin, at no point in Scripture is there validation for this. Yahweh has not revised His commandments, His expectations, or consequences to suit humankind’s degenerate condition, moral deterioration, and rejection of His laws. As much as many would like, He has not made adjustments to His commandments, precepts, or standards to accommodate changing cultural and social norms, values, and lifestyles, even though He has allowed societies and cultures to modernize, developing higher living standards, changing roles, etc. “Yeshua the Messiah is the same yesterday, today, and forever” (Heb.13:8).
“But of the fruit of the tree which is in the middle of the garden, God said, ‘You must not eat of it and you must not touch it, or you will die’”(Gen.3:3). Eve knew very well that she was breaking God’s commandment when she yielded to the temptation to eat the forbidden fruit; yet she made a deliberate, conscious decision to disobey God. God confronted her: “Have you eaten from the Tree from which I commanded you not to eat?” (Gen.3:11); and He proceeded to explain that each one (the snake, Eve, and Adam) had brought a curse on themselves through their disobedience. We see from this, that the initial sin by humankind, was disobedience, a breaking of God’s law; and it brought a curse upon all humankind. That principle remains. When we break His Laws and in so doing, open the door to the Enemy of our souls, we still sin, and thus bring a curse upon ourselves.
When Yahweh commanded His people to “Love Adonai your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength” (Deut.6:5), this was not a mere suggestion. This was a commandment. Neither was it a temporary requirement; it was to be kept forever. Yahweh’s expectations from His people were, and still are, that He is to be exclusive: “You must not go after other gods, the gods of the peoples around you; for Adonai your God in the midst of you is a jealous God. Otherwise the anger of Adonai your God will be kindled against you, and He will wipe you from the face of the earth” (Deut.6:14-16). Yet we observe many who consider themselves followers, walking in the ways of the world, partaking of the fruits of Jezebel’s table, rationalizing and justifying their behaviour, and erroneously feeling entitled to Yahweh’s blessings.
Yahweh’s commandment against adultery is applied to His relationship with His followers. And He has no tolerance for this transgression: “Then Adonai said to me, “Son of man, will you pass judgment . . . . Confront them with their disgusting practices. For they have committed adultery . . . . with their idols . . . . For thus says Adonai Elohim: “Bring up an assembly against them. Give them over to terror and plunder” (Ezek.23:36,37,46). Yahweh is an uncompromising holy God who requires total obedience to all His commands. To break any one of His laws, statutes, or precepts is sin. To NOT BELIEVE in Him is sin; to NOT LOVE HIM is sin; to rebel, be disloyal, unfaithful – all these things are far more than a mere “missing the mark,” as many prefer to define “sin.”
Scripture says there are blessings for obedience, and curses for disobedience:
“If you walk in My statutes, keep My mitzvot/laws and carry them out, then I will give you . . .” (Lev.26:3,4); “but if you will not listen to Me, nor carry out all these mitzvot/laws, and if you reject My statutes and if your soul abhors My ordinances, so that you do not keep all My mitzvot, but instead break My covenant, then I will . . . .” (Lev.26:14-16). From these passages, we see that nothing is more important to God Almighty/Yahweh/Adonai/Jehovah God than obedience. Disobedience to His laws is equated with lawlessness and rejection of Him; and there are consequences for this.
I can hear some of your thoughts already: “oh, that’s Old Testament stuff. . .. . Jesus fulfilled the law. . .. . we don’t have to keep those laws anymore. . .. that doesn’t apply to us now.” Sadly, God’s people have been inundated with the propaganda of watered down doctrine; false doctrine, lukewarm perverted and distorted theology. . .. . . and there are many calling themselves “believers” who have totally abandoned God’s laws.
Yeshua/Jesus came to show us the way to the Father; to show us Who the Father is; not to change Who the Father is. He came to complete that work so people would know how to be, how to walk in God’s ways without focussing on the laws, while walking IN the law, because of love and honour for Himself and the Father: ““If you love Me, you will keep My commandments. . . . . . . . . He who has My commandments and keeps them is the one who loves Me. He who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and reveal Myself to him. . . . . . . . If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word. My Father will love him, and We will come to him . . . . . . . ” (John 14:16,21). Notice the insistence of the recurring word “keep.” (It is not simply about “knowing” His Word, but applying it to your own life.) There was no disparity between the Father and the Son. Yeshua walked out all the commandments of the original covenant, demonstrating, modeling, how to incorporate, integrate, and live out what His Word says. Focussing on loving Him would replace the focus on following laws; however the same laws would be maintained out of love for Him.
In response to one of the Pharisees who came to Him saying “Teacher, what good shall I do to have eternal life?” (Matt.19:16), Yeshua redirected him to the Laws of Torah: “if you want to enter into life, keep the commandments” (Matt.19:17). Again in Luke, the example reads: “Now a certain Torah lawyer stood up to entrap Yeshua, saying, “Teacher, what should I do to gain eternal life?” Then Yeshua said to him, “What has been written in the Torah? How do you read it?” (Lk.10:25,26). “Do not think that I came to abolish the Torah or the Prophets! I did not come to abolish, but to fulfill. Amen, I tell you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or serif shall ever pass away from the Torah until all things come to pass. Therefore, whoever breaks one of the least of these commandments, and teaches others the same, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven. But whoever keeps and teaches them, this one shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. For I tell you that unless your righteousness exceeds that of the Pharisees and Torah scholars, you shall never enter the kingdom of heaven!” (Matt.5:17-20). And yet there are those who claim Yeshua somehow altered, or negated the Father’s laws. . . . . broke rank with the Father . . . .. … utter nonsense.
There was never any attempt to gloss over the consequences of disobedience to the Father’s laws: “Therefore just as the weeds are gathered up and burned with fire, so shall it be at the end of the age. The Son of Man will send forth His angels, and they will gather out of His kingdom all stumbling blocks and those who practice lawlessness (sin). They will throw them into the fiery furnace; in that place will be weeping and gnashing of teeth” (Matt. 13:40-42).Yeshua made it very clear that for anyone who does not believe in Him, that He is the only begotten Son of God, the Saviour of mankind, and who continues to live in sin, it will not end well: “The one who believes in Him is not condemned; but whoever does not believe has been condemned already, because he has not put his trust in the name of the one and only Ben-Elohim/Son of God” (John 3:18). “Yeshua said, “You are from below; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world. Therefore I told you that you will die in your sins. If you don’t believe that I am, you will die in your sins”(John 8:23,24). “Then He will also say to those on the left, ‘Go away from Me, you cursed ones, into the everlasting fire which has been prepared for the devil and his angels” (Matt.25:41). Disappointing Words for those determined to disassociate Yeshua from the Father and Torah; however, these are Yahweh’s Words, and they are the Truth; and all Truth will be realized in the end.
As much as this post-modern era fails to acknowledge sin, there is no indication that God Almighty has altered His concept of sin, nor His condemnation of it. The human race (or at least Yahweh’s Community) would do well to align itself with the views of a holy, and Almighty God. “Everyone practicing sin also practices lawlessness—indeed, sin is lawlessness” (1John 3:4).
