II THESSALONIANS 1:7

and to give you who are troubled rest with us when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with His mighty angels,”

IN TERMS OF THE NEED FOR “CONTEXT,” THIS VERSE IS EXEMPLARY, FOR IT COULD IN NO WAY STAND ON ITS OWN. WITHOUT BEING PUT INTO PERSPECTIVE, IT HAS LITTLE MEANING.

ONLY IN THE CONTEXT OF PAUL’S BEGINNING STATEMENTS, IN WHICH HE FIRST COMMENDS THE THESSALONIAN CHURCH FOR THEIR STRONG FAITH, PATIENCE, UNITY AND LOVE FOR ONE ANOTHER, AND THEIR ENDURANCE OF PROFOUND PERSECUTION AND TRIBULATION, AND GOES ON TO DECLARE THAT GOD WILL BRING JUSTICE TO THEIR SITUATION BY BRINGING TRIBULATION UPON THE HEADS OF THOSE WHO HAVE PERSECUTED THEM, THEN REASSURING THEM OF A FUTURE HOPE, IN THAT THEY WILL RECEIVE REST WHEN THE LORD JESUS/YESHUA HA-MASHIACH RETURNS.  AND HE WRAPS THINGS UP WITH A PRAYER FOR THEM.

WE HAVE THESE SAME EXPECTATIONS TODAY – THOSE OF US WHO WALK WITH THE LORD – AND WAIT FOR OUR TIME OF “REST” UPON OUR LORD’S RETURN, JUST AS THEY DID THEN. WE HAVE THE SAME HOPE NOW AS PAUL REASSURED HIS PEOPLE OF THEN. LET US LOOK FORWARD TO HIS GLORIOUS ARRIVAL AND ULTIMATE REST. OUR HOPE, AND OUR PURPOSE IN THE MEAN-TIME (v.9)  IS FOR HIM TO BE GLORIFIED IN US. MAY WE FULFILL WHAT HE HAS CALLED US TO DO.
