PSALM 51:10

Create in me a clean heart, O God,

And renew a steadfast spirit within me.

PSALM 51 IS AN EXCELLENT MODEL OF REPENTANCE.

DAVID IS CONFESSING, REPENTING, AND ASKING FOR GOD’S FORGIVENESS, AFTER ALL HE’S DONE BECAUSE OF HIS LUST FOR BATHSHEBA. HE IS POURING OUT HIS HEART, ASKING THE LORD TO CLEANSE HIS HEART OF THE EVIL HE HAS COMMITTED.

WE WOULD DO WELL TO FOLLOW DAVID’S EXAMPLE, NOT ONLY BECAUSE OF THE ELOQUENT WORDS OF SORROW, BUT THE OUTPOURING OF THE HEART. HIS GRIEF IS VERY REAL. HIS HEART IS BREAKING FOR WHAT HE HAS DONE. HE IS DESPERATE TO MAKE THINGS RIGHT WITH THE LORD. HE WANTS NOTHING MORE THAN TO BE IN RIGHT STANDING WITH HIS MAKER.

IT IS BECAUSE OF THIS VERY SINCERE HEART, THAT DAVID IS REFERRED TO AS “A MAN AFTER GOD’S OWN HEART.”  EVEN THOUGH HE HAS COMMITTED THE WORST SINS AGAINST GOD AND HIMSELF, HIS HEART CRY IS TO GET BACK IN RIGHT STANDING, REGAIN GOD’S APPROVAL, AND PLEASE HIS MAKER, AND LIVE TO WORSHIP AND GLORIFY HIM.

MAY WE DO LIKEWISE; MAY OUR HEARTS BE THAT SINCERELY BROKEN WHEN WE VIOLATE AND BETRAY OUR LORD’S COMMANDMENTS AND OUR RELATIONSHIP WITH HIM.
