I love the analogy presented in Jason Upton’s “Scarecrow” song. The foolish birds run away  in fear from the scarecrows; the wise birds seek out the scarecrows, knowing  “There’s a treasure waiting in the field; that’s why there’s a scarecrow there” (https://youtu.be/M-nNldaGuxg ). What wonderful gardens are the scarecrows keeping you from discovering, enjoying, perhaps even living in?

SCARECROW LYRICS, by Jason Upton

“There’s a scarecrow
standing in a farmer’s field
What he’s guarding has not been revealed

‘Cause you can’t find something
that’s been found before
And I won’t find nothin’ if I close that door

If I were a bird
If I were a foolish bird
I’d listen to my fear
And fly away from here

But if I were a bird
If I were a wise bird
I’d listen to my heart
And find the treasure waiting in a field, waiting in a field, is waiting in a field

There’s a scarecrow living in my memory
It just hangs around and stares at me
With eyes that look but cannot see
There’s a scarecrow living in my memory

If I were a bird
If I were a foolish bird
I’d listen to my fear
And fly away from here

But if I were a bird
If I were a wise bird
I’d listen to my heart
And find the treasure waiting in a field, waiting in a field, is waiting in a field

Everybody leaves the garden
Everybody needs a home

Everybody’s scared of dying
But no one wants to roll away the stone

Go on and roll away the stone

There’s a scarecrow
wherever a church bell rings
Terrified by the gift she brings
We can’t change nothing without suffering
Even scarecrows need to hear the songs we sing

Let the fear be gone
You’re a child of God

Let the fear be gone
I’m a child of God

Did you know we were supposed to be rejoicing in His coming? Yes, we are to be “eagerly waiting for the revelation of our Lord Jesus Christ” (1 Cor.1:7); “For our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ, who will transform our lowly body that it may be conformed to His glorious body, according to the working by which He is able even to subdue all things to Himself” (Phil.3:20,21).  And so many believers walk in dread of Messiah’s return, when they should be looking forward to it. We are instructed to rejoice in our Saviour’s return, and  “not fear what you are about to suffer . . . Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life” (Rev.2:10). There’s a “treasure waiting in a field” (https://www.musixmatch.com/lyrics/Jason-Upton/Scarecrow ) that the scarecrow  does not want you to find. Are you going to allow the scarecrow to steal that treasure from you? Is the scarecrow stopping you from rejoicing in the Messiah’s return? Making you fearful, instead of joyful, about what His return will bring?

Can you imagine how different things would have played out if Yeshua would have listened to the scarecrow speaking through Peter? Where would your salvation be? Through whom would you be saved?

Matt.16:21-23

21 Yeshua began to show His disciples that He must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things from the elders and ruling kohanim and Torah scholars, and be killed, and be raised on the third day.

22 Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him, saying, “Never, Master! This must never happen to You!”

23 But He turned and said to Peter, “Get behind Me, satan! You are a stumbling block to Me, for you are not setting your mind on the things of God, but the things of men.”

The wise bird/follower will look for the scarecrows that are trying to distract, scare them away from the Garden, for where those dangers are, there is fruit; there are rewards; there is glory. “If you abide in Me and My words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it shall be done for you. In this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be My disciples” (John 15:7,8). When we submit to His call, we will bring glory to His Name; we will bear fruit. When we bear fruit, we will experience answered prayer/blessings. We will be on our way to experiencing:  “the fruit of the Ruach is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control” (Gal.5:22,23). Learn to look for the scarecrows. Seek them out, and find the treasures they are trying to keep you from discovering.

If we are wise birds watching for the scarecrows, we would go to those places that will result in receiving the crown of life, for “Don’t you know that in a stadium the runners all run, but one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may win! Every competitor exercises self-control in all respects. They do it to receive a perishable crown, but we do it to receive an imperishable one” (1 Cor. 9:24,25). “When the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the unfading crown of glory” (1 Pet.5:4). The scarecrow that incites fear of suffering keeps us from some of our greatest rewards. Happy is the one who endures testing, because when he has stood the test, he will receive the crown of life, which the Lord promised to those who love Him” (James 1:12).  We need to kill off the scarecrows and claim the treasures they are hiding/stealing from us.

The scarecrows do a good job of scaring believers away from the rejoicing in Messiah’s Second Coming. There seem to be more believers walking in fear of Messiah’s return than in joyful anticipation of His coming. This, despite all the songs sung about wanting to see His face, not to mention the many Scriptures advising that we should be joyful, awaiting His blessed appearance.  “We wait for the blessed hope and appearance of the glory of our great God and Saviour, Messiah Yeshua” (Titus 2:13),  for “we know that when He is revealed, we shall be like Him” (1 John 3:2).

All the signs are pointing in the direction of Messiah’s return. Yeshua said: “You will be hated by all the nations because of My name. And then many will fall away and will betray one another and hate one another. Many false prophets will arise and lead many astray. Because lawlessness will multiply, the love of many will grow cold. But the one who endures to the end will be saved” (Matt.24:9-13); then He instructs “Now when these things begin to happen, stand straight and lift up your heads, because your salvation is near!” (Lk.21:28).

The foolish bird flies away in fear, missing out on what good things await him in the garden, while the wise bird seeks out the scarecrows, knowing there is something very good there for him. In the same way, we need to realize that the very challenges which drive us away from depending on/walking with the Lord, are the very things that will ultimately bring the greatest rewards. If we are foolish birds, running away in fear, we will miss out on God’s best for us. The very things the Lord asks us to give up/give over to Him are the very things that will bring us higher/closer, and take us deeper into relationship with Him, into His Spiritual truths, and ultimate blessings. Paul says “there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give to me on that Day, and not to me only but also to all who have loved His appearing” (2 Tim.4:8).
